Why Bitcoin?

September 14, 2017

Bitcoin is a first-of-its-kind digital currency. While most money we deal with today is digital (rather than physical) in form, Bitcoin was the first successful attempt at a digital money which has no central issuer and whose rules of operation and balance of economic incentives are “baked” into the code. Unlike any other common currency, Bitcoin has a fixed supply limit of 21 million units (each unit is also called a “bitcoin”) and a fixed schedule of inflation that decreases over time until all units have been “mined”. Bitcoin miners do the serious computational work of securing the network against outside attack and assist in checking the validity of each Bitcoin transaction. Their reward is the newly generated bitcoin

Since it’s launch in 2009, Bitcoin has served as a model for the creation of hundreds of clones as well as serious attempts at new currencies and technology platforms. Bitcoin is the first “cryptocurrency”, and it has spawned an entire new branch for economics, computer science, and industry whose long-term impact on society has only begun to be explored.

Bitcoin also has immediate practical applications. The only thing needed to purchase and transact with bitcoin is a basic mobile phone or computer, providing the otherwise unbanked populations of the world with their first means of economic engagement with anyone on the planet. Bitcoin is borderless and resistant to censorship. No one can prevent a user from sending or receiving bitcoin without shutting down the internet itself. This has led to Bitcoin’s adoption by a wide variety of groups both illicit and ordinary.

Bitcoin’s price and trading history since 2009 is characterized by a series of sharp spikes and a corresponding surge of new investors. Volatility has been dramatic also, seemingly in decline long-term but also elevated in 2017.
